Many people don't really care about good quality gloves or mittens when they go skiing for the first time. Of course, the most important are safety issues - the quality of your skis, boots, poles, helmet... but what about those little things? This is not that easy decision. Such a small thing, if not chosen wisely, may turn your entire day on the slope into a terrible experience. That's why it's important to choose equipment that was created mainly for winter sports, not for fashion.

Gloves, which were specifically designed for skiing and snowboarding, have the dryness, warmth, and features necessary for an entire day in the mountains. The following guide will help you understand the difference between materials that make up each part of the glove. We will explain some features that you may want to consider before buying your first ski gloves.

Do you like the comfortable way you can move your fingers while wearing gloves? Or do you prefer the warmth that mittens can offer?

Mittens were created to provide more warmth. Why? That is easy to explain - your fingers will share one compartment and generate more heat that way. In a glove, your fingers are separated which makes them feel less warm on a hand. Unfortunately, although mittens are so comfy, they limit mobility in certain circumstances. They may also have to be removed to answer your phone, access your pockets or adjust your goggle strap while on the slopes. On the other hand, gloves can give you a feeling of having more control with poles in your hand. However, they will not provide as much warmth. Mittens were once considered the sign of a gaper, but it's not true at all. It just depends on person's preferences. Even some elite level athletes (e.g. Bode Miller) prefer them just because of comfort reasons.

Both gloves and mittens are made up of several components that help keep you protected, dry, and warm. These are the shell material, membrane, insulation, lining, and palm. To compare gloves and mittens materials, you need to start with understanding the way they are designed and created. Basically, you can say that ski gloves are made from two parts - shell and membrane.

SHELL MATERIAL

A major part of ski and snowboard gloves and mittens, that are in stock,  start with a body of the synthetic fabric (usually nylon). The waterproof and breathable fabric is used in high-quality models. These fabrics come in both hard and softshell versions - and both are used for gloves and mittens. Generally, they can be combined with leather or synthetic protective materials in areas of high abrasion (e.g. the palms and fingers). Old-school, tried-and-true material for gloves and mittens is leather. Such gloves are usually more expensive, the leather comes from cowhide or goatskin. It is considered as a better material than nylon shell because leather can be more durable and pliable. What's more, it is naturally water-resistant. When maintained properly, these gloves can last for years.

MEMBRANE

Moving from the inner part of your gloves, we will focus on membranes. You need to agree that wet hands quickly become cold hands. What might be misleading, most of the people think that the only reason that your gloves become wet only because of outer factors. That's not true - the biggest cause of wet gloves is actually your own perspiration and following - lack of breathability from the inside of the glove. That is why the membrane was introduced. It has microscopic pores too small to let liquid water enter the glove, but at the same time - large enough to allow water vapor to escape. Here are some of the most common membranes:

GORE-TEX®

HIPORA®

POLYURETHANE

WINDSTOPPER®
